What is the logic behind the Scheduler?

The Scheduler uses an algorithm comprised of over 20,000 lines of programming code. The algorithm has been developed by the Rostima consultants and engineers and is based on years of experience in developing schedules using traditional methods. In simple terms the Scheduler replicates the logic used by a very experienced schedule planner. It needs input from the user on which parameters to use in building a schedule and then finds the cheapest schedule solution while also making sure that all of the work rules are adhered to. The Scheduler ensures that all workload is covered by resources with the right skills.

How do I tell Scheduler what type of roster I want?

Each group of staff will have their roster defined by a set of rules. For example, you can tell the system the range of shift lengths you require and the range of continuous shifts needed. Scheduler will then create rosters within these rules. You can also set ‘sociability preferences’ to enable you to generate rosters that meet your staff’s desires as well as being efficient. Our consultants will assist you in setting up these rules and advising the impact of them on roster efficiency.

Does Scheduler produce rosters that are workable as well as efficient?

By using the schedule rules, you can ensure that the rosters developed are not only efficient but can also be implemented with your staff. Working with the system, our consultants can also show you the cost of various scenarios so that you can decide what is best overall for your organisation. We aim to produce rosters that staff WANT to work, by accounting for sociability preferences. Unlike the formal work rules (which the system also uses), sociability preferences are not necessarily written into workplace agreements and can include such things as minimum number of scheduled days off and desired number of consecutive days worked. Sociability of rosters is very important for staff morale and can impact costs by reducing turnover and improving recruitment.
