Flexible Working : Addressing the need for Work Life Balance

Work-life balance is about adjusting working patterns to allow employees more flexible working arrangements. This can increase employee morale, reduce sickness and increase productivity. Typical examples include:

  • staggered work hours
  • compressed working hours
  • shift swapping
  • annualised hours
  • job-sharing
  • breaks from work

From 6 April 2003, it became a statutory duty for UK employers to consider applications for flexible working from parents.  Eligible employees (mothers and fathers of children aged under 6, or disabled children under 18) were given the right to request: a change to their working hours; a change to the days on which they are required to work.  Since 6 April 2007, the right to request flexible working has extended to carers of adults.

The Rostima toolkit can be used to help identify the impact of changes to work patterns and help evaluate the possibilities for offering more flexible working to staff. The toolkit enables a user to balance the requirements of the business against the needs of employees and find a solution which suits all.
