Airport Resourcing – more important than ever…

The adage, “the right people in the right place at the right time” runs the risk of cliché but has never been truer for the Aviation industry. With passenger demand predicted to rise by an additional 800 million passengers by 2014, global passenger demand is anticipated to reach an all time high of 3.3 billion passengers.

Operators and handlers are constantly under pressure to maintain, and even enlarge, their market share whilst trying to balance extremely tight operational margins against passenger expectations for competitive fares and excellent customer service. In fact, one of the biggest challenges faced by airport operators is to ensure that the comfort and convenience for passengers is maximised, whilst security levels remains at an all time high.

Security has obviously become an ever increasing feature of our daily lives and nowhere is this readily apparent than in airports. For the majority of passengers, the most overt indicator is the queue at the security checkpoint as more rigorous checks on passengers and their luggage cause bottlenecks. This means that operators need to ensure that they have systems in place which will enable smooth, continuous passenger flows throughout terminals. If the converse occurs, where passengers experience lengthy delays in terminals due to bad check-in and security incidents, then this can negatively impact passengers’ perceptions. Such negative incidents could possibly deter passengers from making any future repeat bookings. Furthermore, such delays would inevitably result in less time for passengers to spend at retail and food outlets available airside, thereby impacting the airport authorities.

In order to ensure that such problems are minimised, highly intelligent workforce scheduling systems are available. One such system is offered by Rostima – a leading provider of Enterprise Workforce Management solutions for the Aviation, Maritime and global Logistics industries.

Rostima offers an easy-to-use and configurable end-to-end solution which enables operators to optimise their labour schedules against the dynamic and varying workloads within an airport, thereby increasing operational efficiency, reducing labour costs, improving service levels and reinforcing staff retention.

The Rostima solution can quickly and accurately determine the level of required airport resources, from flight schedules and passenger loads. Its advanced modelling methodologies can replace the manual process and help staff planners to significantly reduce the time and effort taken in creating cost efficient rosters that are compliant with contract or local working time agreements and yet ensure that the right people with the right skills are deployed at the right time.

New labour management system optimises workforce deployment

The Middle East’s premier marine terminal operator DP World, UAE region, has successfully implemented a comprehensive manpower management system at its flagship Jebel Ali Port facility that marks a quantum leap in the drive for operational efficiency.

The ROSTIMA Labour Management System (LMS) aims to effectively manage time and significantly reduce costs. The system, which is fully integrated with the Port’s advanced electronic berth planning and Gate Automation systems, determines the best labour deployment based on a forecast of variables such as vessel arrivals and gate appointments. It allows for multiple what-if scenarios that can be analysed in terms of cost and labour utilisation.

The workforce is a complicated yet vital tool. Get its implementation wrong and you could lose that contract.

That the global aviation industry is a complex and dynamic operating environment few would deny. Despite air traffic volumes reportedly recovering, the pressure remains on operators and handlers to maintain, and even enlarge, their market share. However, with losses still predicted for the industry, the challenge remains of how to balance extremely tight operational margins against passenger expectations for competitive fares and excellent customer service.
